About Koryn Sheppard, CFLS

Koryn’s hard work and dedication have earned her recognition as one of the Best Lawyers in San Diego for the upcoming 2024 year. Koryn was selected to Super Lawyers for 2023 - 2024. This designation is awarded only to a select number of accomplished attorneys in each state, taking into account peer recognition and professional achievement in legal practice.

As a family law attorney, she has had exposure to a myriad of legal issues, ranging from real property issues to domestic violence cases. The common occurrence of cross-over issues with other practice areas is unique to family law practice. Family law can touch upon all aspects of people’s lives: property, bankruptcy, crimes, injury, and employment, to name only a few. This breadth of experience with the law makes Koryn uniquely qualified to become a judge.

Ms. Sheppard demonstrates a commitment to service to the community. Ms. Sheppard is an adjunct professor for California Civil Procedure at Thomas Jefferson School of Law and is on the Board of the San Diego Family Law Bar Association. Previously, she held various officer positions on the Foothills Bar Association, including President. She has also been a regular presenter for Continuing Legal Education courses. Koryn has published articles for the Foothills Bar Association newsletter and, most recently, has published an article in San Diego Lawyer Magazine.

In addition to her time practicing law, Koryn also teaches yoga and group fitness classes at a local gym.

Koryn earned her bachelor’s degree from UCLA. Her Juris Doctorate was awarded by California Western School of Law, where she also received awards for her academic achievements, placing her on the Dean’s list and earning the top grade (an “AmJur”) in several courses. As a law student, Koryn interned at the Public Defender’s office, appearing for arraignments and bail hearings, interned at the United States Attorney’s Office criminal division, and interned for Hon. Anthony J. Battaglia. Koryn volunteered at California Western’s Innocence Project and worked on the Bail Project.

After law school and before taking the Bar exam, Koryn was a Sheriff’s recruit and attended the police academy at Miramar College.

Koryn Sheppard has spent the last fifteen years guiding families through the complicated and often daunting legal system as a Certified Family Law Specialist- a designation from the State Bar of California earned by a small percentage of attorneys throughout the state.

In addition to representing clients going through the family law process, she is a minor’s counsel, representing children in the most high-conflict and complicated proceedings. Minor’s counsel must take additional annual training dedicated to the representation and protection of the best interests of children, which demonstrates her commitment to not only the practice of law but to the most vulnerable members of our community and our future.

Additionally, Ms. Sheppard is qualified as a Discovery Referee and Pro Tem for Mandatory Settlement Conferences. She has also volunteered her time at the San Diego Law Library, San Diego Family Facilitator’s Office, and at San Diego Veteran’s Village Stand Down program.
